Environmental Groups

The future is in the hands of the coming generation. Right now, the Earth is suffering greatly from the effects of pollution, deforestation, over-fishing, too much garbage and more. The negative effects of man’s existence are taking its toll on the planet. High school students can help turn the tide by creating environmental groups.

Most members of environmental groups in high schools are individuals who are highly motivated and passionate about saving the environment. They want to preserve the natural beauty and resources of their own communities. These groups engage in earth friendly projects, raise public awareness, and inspire people around them to become true protectors of the environment. Here are examples of what high school environmental groups can do.

Set up environmental bulletin boards. The groups can post everyday tips in line with the theme: Reuse, Recycle, Reduce on actual bulletin boards and on online social networking sites managed by the environmental groups.

Use the power of internal media. Daily announcements over the PA system can be made regarding the different environmental projects, daily tips, and pertinent mainstream news concerning the environment. The closed circuit television in the school can be used to broadcast a magazine show or news program featuring the above content.

Spearhead the school recycling program. Members of the different environmental groups together with the administration, faculty and custodial staff can launch a recycling program. Color-coded bins can be placed around the campus for “plastic,” “glass,” “paper” and other types of recyclable materials. The environmental groups should be in charge of sending the recyclable materials to the recycling center. Money collected from the sale should be used for other projects of the environmental groups.

Adopt a park. They should work with the school administration and the city administration to get the proper clearance to adopt a park in their communities. After school and during weekends, organized groups of students will visit the park to clean up, pick up trash, help take care of the plants, paint the play ground equipment or benches with environmental friendly paints, and more.

Environmental groups in high schools can make a difference only if they truly have the passion to take care of Mother Earth. Members of such groups need to be warriors for the planet. This early awareness to the plight of the environment will mold high school students into becoming earth friendly adults of the future.
